Government and Political Stability

Costa Rica has a stable, democratic government.  It's often considered to be the "Switzerland of the Western Hemisphere," as it has no standing army.  Costa Ricans have the highest standard of living south of the USA. According to the World Factbook: "Foreign investors remain attracted to the country's political stability and high education levels, and tourism continues to bring in foreign exchange."

Population

The people of Costa Rica are it's greatest treasure.  They are very family oriented, considerate and friendly.  The word "gentle" often comes to mind when thinking of Costa Ricans.

Other Considerations

Language: Spanish is the official language, but many people know English. It is easy to get around without knowing Spanish.

Ownership/Security: Foreigners can own land in Costa Rica.  Title can be held in fee simple.  Covenants and restrictions will apply to all the estates which will allow appropriate use of the land but protect against uses that devalue the properties or disturb the peaceful use of them.

Cost of Living: In general, two-thirds of that of the USA.

Attractions: Of all of the vacation destinations on the planet, Costa Rica is certainly one the most exotic, as it offers unparalleled natural beauty, fiery volcanoes, misty cloud forests, thick jungle rain forests, and a wide range of national parks and eco-tourism activities.

In addition, Costa Rica has over 1,000 miles of simply gorgeous white-and-black sand beaches, plenty of sunshine, and more than its share of world-class sport fishing, snorkeling and surfing venues.

The most popular nature attractions include a litany of volcanoes, including Arenal Volcano, that almost-daily produces a spectacular show of lava, rock and stream; the active (and viewable) crater in the Poas Volcano; summit tours of the stunning Irazu Volcano; Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve; Osa Peninsula and the Corcovado National Park, and the Caribbean flora and fauna of the Tortuguero National Park.
